WordPress Development UK: Custom Themes, Blocks and Integrations

dijitul builds WordPress sites for UK businesses: custom block themes, bespoke Gutenberg blocks, plugins and integrations with CRM, accounts and booking systems, written so your team can edit safely and updates do not break things. We have built WordPress plugins since the WP e-Commerce days. Every project is a fixed-price quote after a free chat.

Sound familiar?

  • Your site runs on a theme with forty bundled plugins and nobody dares click update
  • Editors can break the layout of a page by pasting from Word
  • The page builder makes every page slow and every edit fiddly
  • You have a WordPress site but your enquiries, events or products need to sync with another system
  • The person who built the site has gone and nobody knows how it fits together

Key facts

  • W3Techs reports WordPress runs over 40% of all websites, so skills and hosting are easy to find
  • We build block themes with theme.json and custom blocks registered through block.json
  • Custom post types and fields model your content properly instead of stuffing it into pages
  • We wrote WordPress ecommerce plugins in the WP e-Commerce era, including a free shipping options plugin and a payment gateway
  • Builds target current PHP (8.3 or 8.4) and avoid heavy page builders where blocks will do
  • Fixed-price quote after a free chat; you own the theme, plugins and content

WordPress, done properly

WordPress is often the right answer for a business website. It is free, the editor is familiar, and you are never short of developers or hosts. The trouble is that it is also easy to build badly: a premium theme, a page builder and thirty plugins, each adding scripts to every page and each a potential security hole.

We build WordPress the other way round. Start from what the editors actually need to do, model the content properly, write only the code that is needed and keep business logic in plugins rather than the theme. The result is a site that loads quickly, that your team can update without breaking layouts, and that another developer can understand in an afternoon.

Block themes and custom blocks

Modern WordPress is built around the block editor. A block theme defines colours, typography and spacing centrally in theme.json, so editors pick from your brand palette rather than a colour wheel. On top of that we build:

  • Custom blocks registered with block.json, for components like pricing tables, product features, team grids or calls to action. Each block has only the settings it needs.
  • Block patterns so editors can drop in a full section, already laid out, and just change the words.
  • Locked templates for page types where the structure should not change, such as service pages or case studies.

Where a site has a lot of structured content, we use custom post types and fields. A vacancy, a property, a course or a product range becomes its own type with its own fields, which keeps listings consistent and makes search and filtering straightforward.

Connecting WordPress to your other systems

Many of our WordPress projects exist to do more than publish pages. Common jobs:

  • Form submissions sent to your CRM as leads, with the right owner and source, instead of a shared inbox. See CRM integration.
  • Events, courses or stock pulled from another system on a schedule and published automatically.
  • Member or customer areas that check entitlements against an external database.
  • Content exposed through the WordPress REST API to a separate app or front end.

We write integrations as custom plugins using WordPress hooks, the HTTP API and proper scheduled jobs, with logging so you can see what was sent and what came back. If the integration needs more than WordPress should reasonably do, we put it in a small separate service. See WordPress plugin development for how we build plugins.

Speed, security and updates

Most WordPress problems we are asked to fix come from three places: outdated plugins, cheap shared hosting and page builders that load everything everywhere. Our builds address each:

  • Plugins kept to the ones that earn their place, from authors with a track record of updates.
  • Scripts and styles loaded only on pages that use them.
  • Images served at the right size in modern formats, with lazy loading below the fold.
  • Admin access by role, strong passwords, two-factor authentication for administrators and no unused accounts.
  • Code in Git and changes tested on staging before they go live.

WordPress core, themes and plugins need updating regularly. You can do that yourselves with the guide we hand over, or our sister company offers WordPress support and maintenance.

Rebuilding or taking over an existing WordPress site

If you already have a WordPress site, we start by looking under the bonnet: theme, plugins, PHP version, hosting, customisations and how content is structured. Sometimes the right answer is a tidy-up and a few new blocks. Sometimes it is a rebuild on a clean theme, moving content across and keeping every URL that ranks. We will tell you which, and why.

On a rebuild we also fix the things that quietly cost you: heading structure, image alt text, colour contrast and keyboard navigation for accessibility; titles, meta descriptions, schema markup and XML sitemaps for search. Redirects are mapped from every old URL so links from other sites and Google keep working, and we check Search Console in the weeks after launch.

Either way, it starts with a free chat and a fixed-price quote for an agreed scope. Get in touch with the address of your current site and what you want it to do better.

What we deliver

  • A custom block theme, or a lean classic theme where that suits the project better
  • Bespoke Gutenberg blocks and block patterns for your layouts, locked where editors should not change them
  • Custom post types, taxonomies and fields for products, case studies, team members, events or listings
  • Custom plugins for business logic and integrations, kept out of the theme
  • Migration from an old theme or page builder with content, URLs and SEO data preserved
  • Performance, security hardening and an update process you can follow

How it works and what it costs

Every project gets a fixed-price quote after a free initial chat and a short scoping stage. You own the code and the data.

  1. Free chat

Tell us the problem in plain English: what you do now, what goes wrong and what "better" looks like. No charge, no obligation.

  2. Scoping

We map the processes, systems and data involved, agree what is in and out, and write it down so there are no surprises.

  3. Fixed-price quote

You get a fixed price for the agreed scope, or a phased plan for bigger builds, so you can start small and prove it works.

  4. Build and test

We build in short stages you can see and try, test against real data, then go live carefully with a rollback plan.

  5. Hand over and look after

You own the code and the data. We can host it, support it and keep improving it, or hand it to your own team.

Frequently asked questions

Do you use page builders like Elementor or Divi?

We can work on existing page builder sites, but for new builds dijitul prefers native block themes and custom Gutenberg blocks. They load less code, give editors brand-safe options and avoid tying your content to a commercial builder that is hard to leave later.

Can you take over our existing WordPress site?

Yes. We review the theme, plugins, PHP version, hosting and custom code, then explain what state it is in and what we would change first. Some sites need a tidy-up, others are better rebuilt. You get a fixed-price quote either way.

Is WordPress secure enough for a business website?

WordPress core has a dedicated security team and is patched regularly. Most compromises come from outdated or poorly written plugins, weak passwords and neglected hosting. dijitul keeps plugin counts low, hardens admin access and sets up an update process so the site stays patched.

Can WordPress connect to our CRM or accounts package?

Yes. We write custom plugins that send form entries, orders or bookings to systems like HubSpot, Salesforce, Xero or QuickBooks through their APIs, and pull data back where needed. Each integration logs its activity so problems are easy to spot.

How much does a WordPress website cost?

We do not publish prices. dijitul scopes each site after a free chat, considering content types, custom blocks, integrations and migration needs, then gives a fixed-price quote. Extra features requested later are quoted before any work starts.

Will we be able to edit the site ourselves?

Yes, that is the point. We build blocks and patterns around your real content, lock layout where it should not change, and hand over a short guide. Most editors are comfortable within a single training session.
