# Web Application Development UK

> dijitul developments builds custom web applications for UK businesses: secure, browser-based systems for staff, customers and suppliers, built in Laravel or Node.js with React or Vue front ends and connected to the tools you already use. Every web app starts with a free chat and is delivered to a fixed-price quote.

## Problems this solves

- A shared spreadsheet that breaks whenever two people edit it
- Staff working from home cannot reach a system that only runs on the office server
- Approvals happen by email and get lost
- Nobody can see the status of a job without phoning someone
- Your desktop software needs installing and updating on every PC

## Key facts

- Runs in any modern browser, so there is nothing to install on staff PCs
- Back ends in PHP 8/Laravel or Node.js/TypeScript; front ends in Livewire, Vue or React
- Role-based access, two-factor login and optional Microsoft or Google SSO
- Background queues for slow jobs such as API syncs, PDFs and bulk emails
- Responsive layouts that work on phones and tablets as well as desktops
- Fixed-price quote after a free chat; you own the code

## What a web application is, and why most business software is one now

A web application is software that runs on a server and is used through a browser. Unlike a brochure website, it has logins, a database and business rules: who can approve a quote, how stock is allocated, when an invoice goes out. Staff use it from the office, from home or on site, and there is only one version to update.

For a growing business, that solves several problems at once. There is no software to install on each PC, remote working just works, data sits in one database rather than in copies on laptops, and changes go live for everyone at the same moment. It is the default shape for most of the [bespoke software](https://dijituldevelopments.co.uk/bespoke-software-development/) dijitul builds.

Typical examples include a job management system that takes an enquiry through quote, scheduling, completion and invoice; an order processing tool that pulls web and phone orders into one queue; a compliance tracker that warns when certificates or training are about to expire; and a quoting engine that applies your pricing rules so junior staff produce the same numbers as the owner. Each replaces a mix of spreadsheets, email threads and memory with one shared record.

When is a web app the wrong choice? If staff work all day without signal, need direct access to hardware such as label printers or scales, or handle very large local files, a [desktop app](https://dijituldevelopments.co.uk/desktop-app-development/) or an offline-capable [progressive web app](https://dijituldevelopments.co.uk/progressive-web-app-development/) may suit better. We will say which fits in the first conversation.

## How we build web apps

Most of our web applications use PHP 8 and Laravel. Laravel gives us tested building blocks for authentication, queues, scheduled tasks, email and database migrations, which means more of your budget goes on the parts that are unique to you. For screens that need to feel instant, such as a planning board or a live order list, we add Livewire, Vue or React. Where a client already runs JavaScript across the business, we build in Node.js and TypeScript instead.

Data lives in MySQL/MariaDB or PostgreSQL, with Redis handling queues and cache. Slow work, like posting fifty invoices to Xero or rendering a large PDF, goes onto a background queue so users are never left watching a spinner. Scheduled jobs handle nightly imports, reminders and clean-ups.

We write automated tests around the rules that matter most, such as pricing, VAT, allocations and permissions, so later changes do not quietly break them.

## Security and access control

Business web apps hold commercially sensitive and personal data, so security is designed in from the first screen. That includes:

- Hashed passwords, rate-limited logins and optional two-factor authentication
- Single sign-on with Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace via OpenID Connect where staff already have accounts
- Role-based permissions down to individual actions, such as view, edit, approve or export
- An audit log recording who changed which record and when
- Protection against common attacks such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting and CSRF, which Laravel handles by default when used properly
- Encrypted connections, nightly backups and tested restores

Under UK GDPR you need to know what personal data you hold and be able to export or delete it on request. We build those tools in rather than leaving you to run database queries by hand.

## Connecting to the rest of your business

A web app becomes far more useful when it talks to your other systems. We regularly connect them to accounting packages through [accounting software integration](https://dijituldevelopments.co.uk/accounting-software-integration/), to card payments with Stripe, to ecommerce platforms, and to Microsoft 365 for calendars, email and SharePoint files. We use each platform's official API, store OAuth tokens securely, respect rate limits and log every call so problems can be traced.

Your web app can also expose its own API, so a mobile app, a partner or a future system can work with the same data. See [API development](https://dijituldevelopments.co.uk/api-development/) for how we document and secure those endpoints.

## From quote to launch

Every web application project starts with a free chat. We then scope the screens, roles, data and integrations in writing and give a fixed-price quote for that scope. You see progress on a staging site throughout, so feedback happens early when it is cheap to act on. At launch we migrate your existing data, train your team and hand over the source code.

Hosting can be on your own cloud account or through our sister service at [dijituldns.co.uk](https://dijituldns.co.uk/). If you want a version in front of real users quickly, an [MVP](https://dijituldevelopments.co.uk/mvp-development/) is a good first phase. If you plan to sell the software to other businesses, read [SaaS development](https://dijituldevelopments.co.uk/saas-development/).

## FAQs

### What is the difference between a website and a web application?

A website mainly publishes information. A web application has logins, a database and business logic: users create, change and approve records. Many projects mix both, but dijitul quotes web applications based on the screens, roles and rules involved rather than page counts.

### Will a web application work on phones?

Yes. dijitul builds responsive layouts, so screens adapt to phones and tablets. If staff need offline use, camera access or home-screen install, we can turn the same web app into a progressive web app rather than building a separate native app.

### Laravel or Node.js: which do you recommend?

Both are mainstream and well supported. dijitul defaults to Laravel for data-heavy business systems because it includes queues, scheduling, auth and migrations out of the box. We use Node.js and TypeScript where a team already works in JavaScript or the app needs lots of real-time features.

### Can staff log in with their Microsoft 365 accounts?

Yes. We can add single sign-on using Microsoft Entra ID or Google Workspace via OpenID Connect, so staff use existing accounts and leavers lose access when their main account is disabled. Roles inside the app are still managed separately.

### How much does a web application cost?

dijitul does not publish prices because scope varies so widely. After a free chat we write down the screens, roles and integrations, then give a fixed-price quote for that scope. Large apps are delivered in phases, each priced separately.

### Who hosts the web application?

You choose. We can deploy to your own cloud account, such as AWS, Azure or a UK VPS, or arrange managed hosting through dijituldns.co.uk. Either way you own the code and the data.

## Pricing and contact

Every project gets a fixed-price quote after a free initial chat and a short scoping stage. You own the code and the data. Book a free chat: https://dijituldevelopments.co.uk/contact/ · 01623 650333 · info@dijitul.uk
